Why Ventilation Matters
When a vehicle engine runs, it releases carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and other toxic gases. Even a few minutes of idling in an enclosed garage can create dangerous concentrations. Add to that the vapours from petrol, solvents, and cleaning products, and you have a potentially hazardous environment.

For most New Zealand garages, a hybrid approach works best: natural ventilation for everyday air exchange, and mechanical ventilation when working with engines, paints, or chemicals.
How to Size Your Ventilation System
To effectively remove exhaust fumes and vapours, the air in your garage should be replaced several times per hour. As a general guide:
- At least 6 air changes per hour for basic storage.
- 10–15 air changes per hour if you regularly run engines or use paints and solvents.
To calculate the fan capacity you need, multiply the garage’s volume (length × width × height) by the desired number of air changes per hour. The result gives you the airflow rate in cubic metres per hour (m³/h) required for your fan.
Positioning Air Inlets and Outlets
Good ventilation depends on proper airflow through the space.
- Air inlets should be placed low, ideally near the garage door or an exterior wall.
- Exhaust outlets should be positioned high and on the opposite side, ensuring air moves across the entire room.
If you often start engines indoors, consider installing a flexible exhaust hose that connects directly to the vehicle’s tailpipe. This removes fumes before they spread through the garage.
Managing Moisture and Condensation
Moisture is a common issue in New Zealand garages, especially in coastal or humid regions. When you park a wet car inside, the water evaporates and can condense on walls and ceilings, leading to rust, mould, and musty odours.
A ventilation system that combines exhaust fans with fresh air inlets helps keep humidity under control. In damp areas or poorly insulated garages, a dehumidifier can be a useful addition to protect tools and stored items.
Energy Efficiency and Noise
Modern ventilation fans come in many designs, from simple wall-mounted units to advanced systems with heat recovery. If your garage is insulated or heated, a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) can help retain warmth while still providing fresh air—saving energy and keeping the temperature stable.
Noise is another factor to consider. Choose a quiet fan if it will run continuously or if your garage is close to living spaces or neighbours.
Maintenance and Safety
To keep your ventilation system working efficiently, clean filters and vents a few times a year. Check that fans run smoothly without unusual noise or vibration. If you use an exhaust extraction hose, inspect it regularly for leaks or cracks.
Remember, ventilation complements but doesn’t replace safe habits: avoid unnecessary idling, store chemicals in sealed containers, and keep the garage tidy to allow air to circulate freely.
